Certified Mental Performance Consultant
Tom is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). He earned his Master’s degree in Sport Science from Merrimack College and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Siena College. His work sits at the intersection of performance psychology, mental skills training, leadership development, and organizational development. Tom has extensive experience working with athletes, teams, coaches, and professionals across youth, high school, collegiate, professional, and corporate environments. His expertise focuses on helping individuals and organizations strengthen leadership effectiveness, develop talent, build confidence, improve focus, manage pressure, regulate emotions, and cultivate high-performing teams and cultures. Tom's approach addresses the whole athlete — building mental toughness, managing performance anxiety, developing focus routines, and creating the psychological resilience needed to transform competitive struggles into sources of strength. In January 2021, Smalley became a Lead Advocate for the International OCD Foundation and co-founded the Anxiety in Athletes initiative, a task force and online resource center supported by the IOCDF aimed at breaking down stigma surrounding mental health in athletics. Tom is a USAW Adaptive Division 3x Gold Medalist and now competes regularly in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
